3 Times Your AC Needs Service From An Air Conditioning Repair Company

Abbie Wade

There will probably be times over the life of your AC that you'll need to call an air conditioning repair company. When your air conditioner malfunctions, it's a good idea to get help as soon as possible since running the AC while it's not working right could harm some of the parts.

At the very least, you may need to call the air conditioning repair company for advice or shut your AC down until the AC technician arrives. Here are a few signs your AC may need professional help.

1. The Compressor In Your AC Won't Start Up

If the compressor doesn't kick on, that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. A part that supplies power to the condenser might be bad instead. If so, that's a good thing since the small parts are inexpensive and a compressor is costly.

An air conditioning repair technician can open up the condenser and use a multimeter to check the power going in and through all the parts like the contactor and capacitor. They can even check the compressor with the multimeter to see if it's bad. Once the bad part has been found, the AC technician can replace it with a new one.

2. The Blower In The Air Handler Won't Start Up

A blower that doesn't work is a problem because the blower is needed to push the cold air through the ducts and into your house. The blower is a fan that's controlled by a motor with the help of a capacitor. If the capacitor or motor goes bad, the blower won't spin.

The air conditioning repair technician can replace a bad blower or bad motor. However, they may test the parts first to verify they're bad. The problem could be something simple such as a dirty blower fan.

3. The Refrigerant Line Is Covered In Ice

If the refrigerant line or one of the coils has ice on it, the situation will probably get worse since the ice tends to build once it starts. Your air conditioning repair technician needs to figure out the problem, which could be dirt on the lines or a refrigerant leak.

Only licensed AC technicians are allowed to work with refrigerant, so if your AC has a leak, there isn't anything you can do about it yourself. The leak has to be plugged and refrigerant put back in the line so your AC starts cooling properly again. However, if the problem is just a dirty copper line, the air conditioning repair technician can scrub the line and refrigerant coils clean once the ice has melted.
