Window AC Vs Ductless AC: Signs You Should Upgrade

Abbie Wade

A window air conditioner can be a lifesaver in the right situation. When you feel like you're boiling and you don't have central air, a window AC can provide the cooling you need. But eventually, you may want to upgrade to a ductless AC.

A ductless AC features a single indoor air handling unit and an outdoor compressor. Here are five signs it's time to upgrade.

1. You're tired of noisy air conditioning.

Window ACs make a lot of noise. Even central air conditioners can be noisy. A ductless AC, however, operates very quietly. Many models are as quiet as rustling leaves. The outdoor units tend to be a little quieter than a whispered conversation.

2. You're tired of installing the window AC every year.

With a window AC, you need to find a place to store it through the winter. Then, you have to lug it out and install it every summer. With a ductless AC, you just pay an installer to put it in, and you don't have to worry again.

The outdoor and indoor units of ductless ACs attach to each other with very small refrigerant and electrical lines that run through your walls. This means that installation is not disruptive, and it can be completed relatively quickly.

3. You want air conditioning throughout your home.

A ductless unit can cool varying amounts of space, depending on the unit you select. If your home is too large for a single unit, you can install multiple indoor units. They will each have their own controls, and they can be supported by a single outdoor unit.

4. You don't want the security risk of window ACs.

Window ACs pose a security risk. Someone could easily come up to your home, push the AC out of the way, and gain entry. In contrast, when you put in a ductless AC, your security isn't compromised at all.

5. You don't want to invest in a central AC.

If you have ductwork already, you could consider putting in a central AC. But this also has limits. In particular, it only connects to a single thermostat. As indicated above, you can control each ductless unit separately so you can ensure that your home is perfectly comfortable.

6. You also want heating.

If desired, you can also opt for a ductless system that includes heating. These systems feature a heat pump that draws hot air out of your home during the summer. During the winter, the process is reversed and the system brings in hot air from the outside. Yes, even when it's cold.
