Is Your Furnace Blowing Cold Air? Here Are Some Possible Causes

Abbie Wade

The fall is getting colder, and it will soon usher the winter. That means you need a functional heating system to beat the cold. For many homeowners, the furnace is the best shield against the winter cold.

But to ensure the optimal performance of the unit, you must inspect it. The best time to check the condition of your furnace is right before the onset of winter. If your unit seems to blow cold air instead of warm air, it is time to think about possible causes and repairs. Keep reading to learn some common causes of furnace malfunction and how to handle them.

A Failed Thermostat

The first place to check when your furnace stops working is the thermostat. It is the part of the unit that determines the home's heating needs. Sometimes, the thermostat can develop simple technical issues that you can troubleshoot and fix. However, a complex issue requires the intervention of an experienced HVAC contractor.

The efficiency of your thermostat can diminish if you leave the fan running. A continually running fan blows air in the house, interfering with the heating process. To avoid this, it is advisable to set the fan to auto mode. That way, the fan only runs when needed and stops when the ideal temperatures are attained.

The High-Limit Switch Failure

Though the furnace filter might seem like an insignificant component of the furnace, it can cause severe damages to other parts if left unchecked. For instance, a neglected and dirty filter will not allow air into the furnace as it should. Consequently, the furnace will start overheating.

Even though the furnace can tolerate some level of overheating, it may eventually fail if the situation spirals out of control. When the high limit switch fails, the furnace misinterprets this information to mean that the house is overheating. As a result, it will start blowing cold air continuously into the house.

Complications in the Condensate Line

The condensate line is a sensitive component of the HVAC unit that requires proper care and maintenance. When the system runs in the summer, cold water drips into a pan. If the lines get clogged, the float switch will trip, and the entire system will shut down. Cleaning the system helps avoid instances that lead to this damage.

When you experience trouble with your furnace, contact a heating repair technician right away. You will enjoy a warm and comfortable winter by fixing the unit in good time. More importantly, you will prevent the issues from escalating into costlier damage.
