5 Ways To Avoid Running Out Of Propane

Abbie Wade

Running out of propane can be a real problem if you depend on it for heating or cooking. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to minimize the chances that you will run out of propane.

1. Order In Advance

If cost or availability is an issue, then ordering your propane for the season in advance can help on both counts. Many propane services will lock in the price in summer, when it is often lower, if you place your order and reserve the propane in advance of the winter season. This allows the service a chance to buy up propane when the prices are best, and you have effectively secured your fueling needs in advance of the winter rush.

2. Set Up a Delivery Schedule

You can have the propane delivered on the same day every four to eight weeks, depending on how often your tank needs to be filled. The service will top of your tank so that it never has a chance to run completely empty. Some services even offer a discount for this type of scheduling, as it makes it easier to route trucks and plan deliveries.

3. Install a Tank Monitor

A tank monitor provides a real-time reading of the levels in your propane tank. These are different than a simple gauge, as the monitor is read remotely by your propane service. If levels drop to a certain level, it sends a ping to the service to let them know a delivery is needed. Some monitors are integrated into smartphone apps as well, so you can monitor the levels from your phone if you wish.

4. Upgrade the Tank Size

If it always seems as if you are running low on propane, it may be time to install a larger tank or to put in a second tank. A growing family or new additions to a home can increase propane usage and tank size needs. Keep in mind there may be local codes that limit the size or number of tanks you are able to have on your property, though.

5. Make Delivery Easy

You may end up running low on propane if the service can't make the delivery. Winter deliveries can be the most challenging due to weather. Always make sure that there is a clear path to the tank fill port. This may mean shoveling snow or keeping landscaping trimmed away from the tank. Avoid blocking access, such as driveways, with vehicles on delivery day, as well.
