Tips to Balance the Flow of Cool Air in Your House

Abbie Wade

One of the most annoying cooling problems is to experience cold and hot spots in the same house. The problem can force you to keep adjusting your thermostat every now and then, and even the constant adjustments might not help. If you are suffering from such a problem, the following tips can help you solve it.

Proper Sizing

The first step is to ensure your AC is properly matched to your home; this is known as sizing. The AC's cooling capacity should be matched to the size of your home, the number of windows, the local climate, and even the number and layout of your rooms. If the AC isn't sized properly, it might not run long enough to cool all parts of the house, and you will experience uneven cooling.

Proper Duct and Vent Design

The ducts supply air into different rooms and channel heated air back to the AC for cooling. The vents are the openings that air follows into and out of the ducts. Both things should be properly designed and placed so that each room receives adequate air for cooling and stale air doesn't stay in a room for longer than necessary. For example, if you use the same number of ducts and vents for rooms with different sizes, the bigger rooms may not get adequate cool air and they might remain warmer than the rest of the house.

Efficient Airflow

Any problem that impedes airflow in the house can lead to uneven cooling. Examples include blocked vents, leaky ducts, and blocked cuts. For example, if a supply duct has a connection that is disconnected, then the affected joint will leak air and the room that the duct serves won't get adequate air. That room will cool slower than the other rooms in the house.

Adequate Insulation

Adequate insulation ensures that the outside air or temperature doesn't affect your indoor air or temperature. Say the sun is shining and the weather is hot; if your siding is not properly insulated, the exterior rooms will be hotter than the interior rooms.

Zoning System Installation

If all of the above tips fail, then consider a zoning system for your house. It might be that your house's configuration cannot be adequately cooled by your AC without further help. A zoning system makes use of multiple thermometers for independent control of specific zones in the house.

Hopefully, the tips above will help you avoid uneven heating. To learn more about air conditioner and air conditioning repair, reach out to a company near you for a professional technician's advice.
