2 Regular AC Maintenance Tasks You Can Do

Making sure that your air conditioner is working the way that you want it to work means that you need to do some maintenance regularly. This is especially true when it's spring and you are getting ready to start your AC for the cooling season. So, what are some of the maintenance tasks that you need to do to keep your air conditioner running well?

Outdoor Unit

One thing that you can do is to make sure that you check over the outside unit carefully before you start it for the summer. You want to make sure that there isn't any kind of grass or other vegetation growing up through it. You also want to make sure that none of the grass near the unit is growing too high either. The air conditioning unit needs to have a constant airflow in order to work well, and plants growing through or around it will keep that from happening. If it's the first time that you are starting the AC for the summer, you also want to make sure that nothing took residence in the unit during the winter or early spring. The unit is semi-protected, and critters like to have somewhere protected in order to live. 

Filters

Another regular maintenance task that you need to do is to change the filters on your air conditioner regularly. The filters are there to keep stuff from flying through your air conditioner and into the ducts. Everything that flies through your ducts is going to get spread through your house. Filters keep that from happening. They will catch everything that might be in your ducts and keep it from blowing through your house. There is just one problem with that. As they catch all that stuff, they get dirty. When the filters get dirty, it gets harder for the air conditioner to push air through it, which means your AC is going to work harder to give you the same amount of cool. That will run up your electric bill, but that hard work will make your air conditioner fail sooner, which will end up costing you all kinds of money. 

If you are worried about your air conditioner and maintaining it correctly, you can always call an HVAC company and ask them to send a service tech out to your house to check over your AC and make sure that it is running as well as it should.
