3 Signs It's Time To Replace Your HVAC System

Abbie Wade

Your HVAC system plays a key role in keeping your home comfortable. When temperatures get uncomfortable warm or uncomfortably cold, you want an HVAC system that is reliable. However, it's important to remember that even the best HVAC systems will need either repair or replacement. Once your HVAC system starts to get toward the end of its lifespan, it can be difficult to determine whether or not it's time for a replacement. Here are three signs to look out for that signal it's time to get a new system.

1. Everything Is 15 Years Old or Older

If you are considering replacing part or all of your HVAC system, it's important to take a look at the age of each component. The average lifespan for a central air conditioner is around 15 years. Furnaces typically require replacement somewhere between 15 and 20 years. Of course, with proper care and maintenance, you may find that your HVAC system works well for longer than the average lifespan. However, once you get to the 15-year mark it's important to start planning for replacement at some point in the next few years.

2. Repairs Are Needed Often

Another sign that your HVAC system needs replacement is that is in need of repair or maintenance frequently. While regular HVAC services can help keep your system running well and extend its lifespan, if you require these services more than once or twice a year, you may want to consider replacement. Repairs can also be pricey. The cost of repairs can vary depending on the system and the components requiring repair. The average cost of repair ranges from $163 to $526. Repair costs can quickly add up, and in many cases, replacement may be the more cost-effective option.

3. Lower Energy Efficiency

Lower efficiency is also a sign that it may be time to replace your HVAC system. There are a few signs to look for that indicate that your system is not as efficient as it once was. Higher energy bills are one obvious sign. Unequal cooling or heating in certain rooms can also indicate issues with your HVAC system. If your system is older, it's also likely that it is far less energy efficient than newer systems. If you are looking for more energy efficiency, replacement may be the right option.

Replacing your HVAC system is something that you will eventually find yourself needing to do. A few signs that replacement may be needed include having a system that is older than 15 years, a system that requires frequent services or repairs, or a system that is not working as efficiently as it did in the past.
