How To Improve Your HVAC Air Quality

Abbie Wade

One goal of many homeowners is to improve the air quality in their home. It's a great move for improving the health of home residents. Here are some things that you can look into to improve air quality.

HVAC

The biggest factor that will affect your home's air quality is the condition of your HVAC system. This is because heated and cooled air from your furnace and air conditioner will travel through this system to reach all rooms of your home. When there is a problem in one area of the duct work, it can create a problem throughout the home. Take, for example, a moldy area of ductwork. As air blows through the system, mold spores may travel to other parts of the HVAC interior and start to grow there as well. Plus, the HVAC will blow those mold spores into your main home, where you will breathe them in.

To avoid having mold, bacteria, and other unwanted particles in your HVAC, a routine cleaning is a great idea. Your HVAC inspector will need to use equipment to remove grime and disinfect any areas that have been contaminated. While they're at it, have them replace your HVAC air filters which may be contaminated as well.

Furnace

Your furnace can also greatly affect your air quality, It has its own air filter that must be changed on a regular basis. You should also check to make sure that the combustion chamber is clean, since a faulty combustion process could release more gases into the environment of your home.

Air Conditioner

An air conditioner can be a source of mold growth if you're not careful, so be sure that you or your air conditioning contractor does regular maintenance. For one, be sure to clean the drip pan on the regular basis or make sure that it's draining on its own. Air filters, as always, must be replaced regularly; every few months is typical for an air conditioner. If your air conditioner has an outdoor component, make sure that it's not sucking up fumes or debris from the outdoors and bringing it into your home; check to ensure that the exterior unit isn't damaged.

Standalone Devices

Finally, there are standalone devices that can improve your air quality depending on which factors need the most work. Some of these filter pathogens and particles out of the air for a cleaner air source. Others add or remove humidity so that it's at an optimal level.
